'00 S40 engine mount S40-V40

I believe the engine mount needs replacement. Symptons: vibration after starting the car and when accelerating on the freeway. The thing is, the car has about 183,000 miles on it and I don't want to do any expensive repairs since all I want is another 17,000 miles out of it before getting a new car. I don't mind the vibration too much, since it's unnoticeable in city driving which is most of my driving. It's only noticeable after starting the car at idle, and when accelerating on the freeway. My question is, how dangerous is it to drive a car with worn engine mounts? Should I have it repaired immediately?

thanks,
David

Have a mechanic check it out first. It could be crummy spark plugs. An engine mount is not an expensive part.

I just had the spark plugs replaced and I remember the vibration before the plugs were replaced. Is it dangerous to be driving with worn engine mounts?

Dangerous, no. The engine will not fall out of the car. But the wires between the engine block and those on the fender/firewall could get stressed over time. As soon as you get finances, get the engine looked at by a reputable Volvo indie. Except for the labor rate, even a dealer isn't that bad. But ask for a quote from both.

When you say the wires can be stressed over time....is there a chance for the car to all of a sudden lose power on the freeway while driving 60MPH? That sounds dangerous to me.

          Thanks,
          David

Drining at any speed can be dangerous, regardless of your choice of manufacturer. The engine dying at 60mph on a freeway or 30mph on a curving, downhill section of road is even more dangerous - no power brakes or steering. Ask those that have had the fuel pump relay fail.

As I stated earlier, the engine mounts are not critical parts. The engine will drop down to the subframe and rest there if there is a catastrophic failure, but the engine will not stop running. If left unrepaired for a long time, there could be consequential damage to the wiring or other parts of the car.

You have driven this car for 185K miles with maintenance. You will need to keep maintaining it until you sell it.

I am not a mechanic, so can you trust what I type?
