Pulling to the right V70-XC70 1998

Has anyone had the problem of your car consistently drifting to the right? I've had the problem a number of times. One time they replaced the idler arm or control arm-- I don't remember which-- and it helped for a short time and then I started to have the problem again. I just took the car in again and they aligned it and it didn't help at all. Any ideas? It drifts enough so that when I take my hand off the wheel, within a pretty short time the car would be going off the road.

Re: Pulling to the right V70-XC70 1998

Hi Melissa,

I agree with George on cross tire rotation. I even went as far as to add a full size spare (a very very tight fit in the spare tire wheel well) and I am now doing a 5-tire rotation.

However, not all radial tires can be crossed rotated. Some radial tires are directional and can not be crossed rotated. Therefore, check your tires before you do a cross rotation. Also when buying a new set of tires make sure you buy non-directional tires.

If the tire rotation does not fix the problem check to see if you have a stuck brake caliper or a warped brake rotor. Slight braking applied to a wheel will cause the car to drift.

Ply steer is common on tires used on AWD cars. You may want to have the tires cross rotated. Move the LF to RR, RF to LR, and move the rear tires forward. This is almost as important as changing the oil on AWD cars. Depending on driving style and conditions, the tires should be rotated every or every other oil change.
