OK. So I had my fuel filter changed by my indie a couple of weeks ago. The day after, I got a CEL and p0171- system too lean. I took it back and asked him to check for misplaced lines around the filter, he said he saw nothing.

SO yesterday, I jacked the car up and I saw what he calls a fuel filter replacement. He CUT my fuel lines on both sides of the filter, and used rubber piping held on with clamps to hold the lines to the filter....Im thinking of asking him to replace my fuel lines. Is it just me, or does that seem a bit obsurd...

secondly, Ive checked for vacuum leaks in the usual spots, no luck. Im thinking that it is this rag-tag type of install that could be causing this.

Any ideas?

Car runs normal, as if nothing happened. No rough idle or major loss in fuel economy. i reset the light and it comes back within a day or two.

Andy, he cut off the quick release on the fuel lines?????? By all means, ask him to buy some OEM new ones. But I would wonder if he could install them without screwing up something else, like the fuel pump.

Your lean condition could be caused by a dirty MAF or a leaky vacuum elbow. When was the last time you replaced the air filter? Make sure it is seated correctly.

by the looks of what he did, he cut the fuel filter out of the car, then cut the connectors off the old filter, then connected the quick connectors with the new pipe and clamps.

Will check the airfilter tonight. I changed it, oh, about 5 k miles ago.

Im assuming i can use MAF cleaner to clean the maf? any special chems I need?

I was planning on checking the charcoal canister lines, exactly where abouts is the canister?

I plan to ask him to replace the entire line for cutting it up. I think thats straight up ridiculous!

The charcoal cannister is in the left front fender well. But, what usually goes wrong and sets an EVAP code, is in the rear, next to the fuel filter. A 90 degree elbow can crack.

I checked that one when I had the car up yesterday, the elbow looks fine.

I'm wary of cleaning the maf, I can't afford a new one if I mess it up.

could it be the actual filter restricting flow? ill check the pressure tomorrow. what should i see as normal?

Also, ive heard that if the coolant sensor is faulty (reading wrong) that the car will run lean to prevent it from burning the fuel too hot and over heating. Any truth to that? I asked my dad what he put in the co0ling system after the radiator was replaced, he said straight water.

Do you think that flushing and replacing with 50/50 could help?

as far as a vacuum leak, I have sprayed soapy water onto the elbows I can see while the car is running, no bubbles.

You just made me smile with that post :)

The fuel pressure should be between 38-42lbs at the end of the fuel rail.

Using straight water as coolant is not good for the engine. Please flush it and mix 50/50 with antifreeze and distilled water. Antifreeze will raise the boiling point above 212F and cools the engine better.
The instrument panel temp gauge is not the best, as it is a general guide to how hot the engine is. Only when something is abnormally wrong with the gauge show too hot or too cold, which usually implies the sender has malfunctioned or you ran out of coolant.

You will never see bubbles of soap on a vacuum system, it is drawing air in and not pushing air out. Those who own their own torches will use an unlit bottle of butane to pass over the vacuum lines and intake manifold, when the engine idle changes it is a signal that there is a leak. If the elbow appears to be cracked, replace it with new.

When checking the filter, look for an embossed arrow on the side. It should be pointing towards the front of the car. If it points to the fuel tank, take it off and turn it around.

In regards to the Engine Coolant Temp sensor, when it fails the ECU will set a check engine light. The ECU will go into default mode, a cold engine, and you will run rich.

this is a learning experience! =)

I took the car back to my shop today. They did a smoke test on the evap system. The little valve that sits near the fuel filter (can't find the name or PN) had a hole where a plug should have been. He put a cap on it, and now I am waiting to see if the light comes back.

                Flushing the rad. this weekend.

Thanks klaus, you're always so helpful and not sarcastic like those people over at volvospeed!

The immature people on Volvospeed turn me off. Too bad, there are a some very knowledgeable folks on that board, but the others turn me off.
The Volvospeed search engine leaves a lot to be desired.

Duh, I don't know. Could it be the return flow check valve?????

you're going to laugh at this.

They did NOT cut the fuel line. He bypassed the valve under the pressure reglator and connected the two ends with rubber fuel line. LOL

He ordered a new line from volvo today. =)

It should be a little hard to start without valve, all of the fuel in the line draining back into the pump.
Take a good look before you drive off.

Im going to watch him do it. I do my own basic maintenance, so Im not COMPLETELY car stupid.

It is a bit hard, but it doesnt have to crank or anything. I thought it was the battery giving up.
