2000 S70 TO BUY OR NOT? S70

Could someone comment on any common problems associated with buying a 2000 S70 non turbo to look out for? I am considering purchasing one, and want to know what to ask and look out for. Thanks for any help.

Kenzoil

The ETM should have been upgraded. Depending on the mileage, the 5 speed tranny should get flushed. Also, depending on the mileage, clean out the flame trap and start replacing vacuum elbows.
There is a potential P0440(?) code for the evaporator due to the plastic elbow splitting. You will find it by the rear passenger wheel well.
Other than that, make sure the electricals all work, the AC still works properly, and it will be a good under powered car.

Can you be a little more specific in regards to this comment!!

That's as specific as I can get :)
The EVAP leak message sets the CEL and is a bugger to find. True for all S70 from 1998-2000 and perhaps 01-02 also.

Without sounding stupid, what is the ETM upgrade? and what does it stand for?
thanks

ETM = electronic throttle module. Introduced in 1999, it was prone to failure. Audi gave it 10 years or 200K miles, but dealers are told to "reprogram" it first which usually extends the life for another year. Doing a search for ETM will give you pages of posts.
I hope this car comes with maintenance records. There is a Canadian outfit that rebuilds the ETM for a few hundred.

So if I consider a 1998 model, I don't have to worry about an ETM module?

thanks for the help.

Not only does the 1998 not have ETM, it also doesn't have individual coil over plugs to worry about, or variable valve timing. Fewer computers to keep things simple, fewer fuses, but watch out for the AC evaporator and rotting vacuum lines.

The etm is not a problem in the sense that it used to be. Take the car to a Volvo dlr and they'll tell you if the etm recall has been taken care of. If not, they'll take care of it there and then with no cost to you. If it has, then it's no big deal. Go for the 2000 and don't worry about it. More than likely it's already been taken care of.

I had a 99 that was just totaled. It worked great. Have it checked for worn Control Arm bushings, torn CV boots and a deteriorated upper engine mount. Timing belt needs to be or was changed at 105K. That's a big deal because it's an interference engine. Timing belt breaks, valves get bent, wallet lightened substantially and rather quickly.
