ABS TRACS Speedo question V70-XC70 1998

Got a dash warning for ABS and TRACS and speedo stopped working. The next day it started working again. Now the speedo works, but the ABS warning came back. Does this failure usually start intermittently? Should I bother checking the wheel sensors, or just box the module up and send it to BBS Reman?

Link to the rebuild you need if module is #9162675:

Here's a link to their ebay auctions. With some luck, you can save a good bit:

This is my first official referral. Please tell them you were referred by Rob Greenfield. If there's more than one, I'm the one from Galesville, MD. They've rebuilt a VW ABS, a Volvo ABS, and a Saab SID for me. All work perfectly.

To get the unit off, you'll need to move the airbox out of the way. Unscrew the two MAF screws and pull the MAF out. Leave it connected to the air hose. Below the MAF, you'll see the purge valve clipped to the side of the airbox. Unclip it. You may also want to disconnect the ignition wire going to the coil (on fender). There's two fasteners at the bottom of the air box close to the engine. Squeeze the end of the fasteners together while lifting the air box to release them. The airbox is still held by a plastic projection that fits into a rubber grommet bu the fender. Lift the airbox towards the engine and it will pull the pin from the grommet. In the process, the inlet tube will get disconnected. There will still be one hose connected, but it's rubber and can be bent. Move the air box out of the way towards the radiator.

The connector on the module is odd. The entire top of it is a lever that when swung, releases the pins and pulls it off. The hinge is towards the engine and the release latch is towards the fender (or the other way around). Once this is off, there's another connector that powers the ABS pump. The shell is brittle and it's easy to break the release. Mine broke, but it still holds in fine.

There are four screws holding the module to the pump body. The heads are E5 torx and nothing except this module uses this screw. You can get a socket at Sears. It's cheap, around $4, but will need to be ordered. You can also get them from mobile tool trucks (Matco, Snap-On, etc.). Be careful not to let the module fall when taking out the last screw. It fits over a series of pins on the pump body, so you'll need to lower it a bit to clear the pins.

Expect to have it off for about a week. They have a 3 day turnaround, so add 2x shipping time to that. If you spring for an exchange, you can put the new one on right away. Otherwise cover the exposed pins with saran wrap and tape in place to keep it from falling onto the exhaust. Cover the connectors too. You can drive with it off, but you will have no ABS (but probably didn't before anyway). You'll also have no speedometer. Luckily my GPS shows speed, so I used that. Trip computer doesn't work either as it thinks you just started the car and sat in the driveway for the entire trip.

Good luck.

For verification, read the trouble codes from a scanner, I usually stop by a local auto parts store for a freebee.
Look a Vic's web site and see if the description fits.

Every morning, it fixes itself and then breaks later in the day. Thanks for the info on the rebuild. I'm going with BBS Reman. They've done work for me before and it was always done well.
