Radiator Cleaning

Greetings, people of the brick.

I'm replacing the thermostat on my '97 850 GLT wagon (Odo: 138K) and replacing the coolant at the same time.

Should I use a radiator cleaner? The directions state that I'm supposed to run the car for 6 hours with just water and the quart of cleaner in the system.

Is this safe? Is it a worthwhile process? Does it really clean the system?

A quart of Prestone Super Radiator Cleaner was included with the car when I bought it.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Norman- 15 miles south of Seattle. 85 degrees for the next 3 days. Believe it or not.

    Radiator Cleaning

Take a look at the overflow reservoir, it is dirty? If not, it is dirtier than the radiator would be. If the resrevoir is dirty, then go ahead and use the bottle. Just make sure you use distilled water.

A better thing would be to remove the radiator fan, easy to do, and using a spray nozzle on a garden hose, flush out the dirt from the cooling fins and the condenser.
