Volvo "official' timing belt change interval V70-XC70 2002

Beware !

Volvo suggest a 168 000 km (105 000 miles) interval for timing belt change.

Look at the pictures below.

SCARY !

It's mine at 145 000 km (89 000 miles)

I'm a lucky guy I think. I was changing the oil and I had a look at the next big job on the Volvo. Wow ! Glad I did !

Nice easy 3 hours job.

So guys check on your belts before Volvo suggest it !

It's my first post, but I read a lot on this forum.

I did my 01 V70 T5a late 2008 with 90K miles, and it looked new. However I saw it as something I could do and it wasn't that expensive. Seeing yours enforces it was the right decision.

My daughter's S70 has 155K miles and she "thinks" it was changed by the previous owner (X-wife) before she got the car. I did a visual and it looks like new. I've already bought the new one and am only waiting for our two schedules to match some weekend and I'll get this done! Her's has the newer tensioner so while the manual says 70K interval, wouldn't it be 105K like mine recommends since basically it is the same engine (but non-turbo) and the same timing system?

The 1999 with the new tensioner is also 105K. Try to find out when the belts were changed, the 1999 had an early change because the original tensioners would fail around 90K. The tensioners have been improved since 2000.

Thanks Klaus, this confirms my rational. I'm not sure I can find the date the belt was changed, but the X was pretty good at keeping up the maintenance on the cars, so I'd guess she had it changed at 70K like the book said. With plus 90K above that it's right on time for a change as the mileage is 155K. I'll be doing all the fluids and the distributor, plug wires, rotor, and plugs while I have it.

You are indeed a lucky lucky man.

    Good on you for checking.

FWIW, my haynes manual recommends a drastic interval reduction for 'severe' service, which it defines as mostly short trips. It doesn't deal with cars as new as yours, but for the 1998-2000 S/V70 line it says the interval is 70k miles, to be reduced to 40k miles for severe service. I guess 40k is when we should start inspecting on these cars.

I would say judging from your belt, that on the newer 105k miles interval belts, one would be prudent to start checking around 75k-80k miles.

    thoughts?

Picture #2 looks like you cut it off the engine. I certainly hope it didn't pull apart!

This is why mileage alone cannot be used for TB changes. Age matters! A lot!

Some suggest every 6/7 years regardless of mileage. I need to inspect my wife's car tonight. Thanks.
