removing oil pan without removing oil pump? 850 1995

On my 850NA engine (1995) I am going to remove the head for valve service and ?? more. In order to see whether I think the engine is worth extensive work I want to inspect the bottom end, including oil uptake, etc. Can remove the oil pan without removing the oil pump, and then remove the oil pump only if I think there is reason to do that?

thanks
ksg

By all means, remove the pan. The pump is part of the timing belt and does not fall out. Just be careful when removing bolts from the pan, they are not all the same size and you need to put them back where you removed them from. There is no gasket, but a liquid sealant. Bay 13 has a couple of pics.

      Klaus, thanks for good info.

What common sense I have serves me well by telling me what to do, but what I learned while getting my PhD serves me well by telling me what not to do.

        Just opinion from a dummy 850 1995

Used to be, a PhD was only granted for Philosophy, an educational endevor and achievement for those that want to think.
Today's money hungry universities allow a PhD in any field and is worthless, in my opinion, unless teaching in that particular field. All one seems to learn is how to publish in a purely scientific matter. A PhD in organic chemistry doesn't mean that the person can actually apply O chem to everyday life problem solutions. It just means that the person is very good at school.
It is common sense and general knowledge that is important to mankind, subjects not taught in universities or high schools.
