Painting brake calipers ALL 2001

I am thinking about painting my brake calipers Red to match the paint of my car.

Anybody knows of the correct procedure (process, how many times, how to protect the discs, etc.), what type of paint, how long will it last, etc...

Thanks,

Yannis

Re: Painting brake calipers ALL 2001

    Yannis,

I went with gold and was painted recently. After two months, still looks great! I did the following process:

    1. Protect wheels by taping/masking off.

    2. Treat the rotor with Rust Mort. This will crystalize the rust

    3. Prime with any good rattle can stuff

    4. Use high heat paint found in your local hardward store

Using better quality products, profeesional primers and paints are a good idea, I did not have the time to go that route. With regards the rotor, I did not tape or mask the rotor. The paint that did get onto the rotor burnt off after a few hard stops.

    Hope this helps.

    Yannis,

I like anwering this popular question because folks have suggested everything from expensive paints to grinding and sanding the calipers before painting. What I do (and all my car enthusiast buddies) is very simple and cheap. Purchase some "rust paint", the type you can apply right over rust and is popular for painting wheelbarrows, swings, garden tools etc. It is sold is small cans and costs next to nothing.I use "Tremclad" brand. With the wheels removed, I simply wipe off any excessive dirt and grime using a rag and 10W40. That's all. Then I apply my choice of colour with a brush. Done. It takes about 15 minutes a wheel to do, and you don't have to wait for the paint to dry before mounting the wheel back on, because as you know, the wheel does not come in contact with the calipers. I did mine two years ago, and they still look great even after surviving two winters. When cleaning my rims with Eagle One cleaner, I also spary directly on the calipers, giving the paint a new fresh look. I do this every week...Good Luck! BTW, Rec calipers stop fast then Blue ones...;)

Re: Painting brake calipers ALL 2001

      Tony,

thanks for the suggestion...I would never go "in there" and sand, grind or whatever. I am looking for something not very intrusive and easy to do. Your suggestion seems fairly simple and not "harmful". I just thought that there might be a need for special paint due to the excessive temperatures that the calipers develop, especially on the front wheels. It seems like the paint you used is working.

I will give it a shot. With the type of alloys that I have, I think they would look nice since a lot of the calipers show.

      Thanks a lot!

      Yannis

Yannis, I think they lay it all out over at Bay-13.....tell you "how to", what brand paint to use, and where to get it.

      Steve,

Thanks. I checked the site out but there is nothing that pertains to painting calipers...
