Basic suspension question S60 2004

Hello,

So this might be a very basic suspension question, but I have long complained to my dealer that there is an odd hollow bumping noise over certain bumps, particularly when it is cold out.

Whilst cleaning up the engine bay on the car today, I noticed a 3/8th's gap between what looks like the bumper at the top of the strut and where it should sit. Both sides are evenly spaced and the space disappears when the car has one or both front wheels off the ground. The nut and torx bolt combo at the top appear to be as tight as they can get.

See picture, is this normal or what needs to be replaced?

Thanks,

The first time I saw that space, I went ballistic!! But, it is supposed to be there.
To look for a "clunk", reach behind the wheel and grab the vertical sway bar end link and give it a hard shake. If it moves, replace them on both sides with IPD links - much better than OEM and easy to do.
