Axle Question 850

I'm in the process of removing my passenger side axle to replace a torn inner CV boot and I'm wondering if the type of c-clip holding the inner CV joint together is the same type of c-clip used to hold the outer CV joint together. If so, then I've got the correct c-clip pliers and I don't need to buy another.

I've got a 1994 850 turbo wagon.

Thanks in advance!

    Axle Question 850

Can't help directly on the type of clip. When I was faced with a torn boot, I replaced the entire axel for about $70 with a rebuilt unit. In my area we have BAP/Geon and they are great to deal with. If I was removing the axel for one boot, may as well change both and that puts you in the realm of just replacing the axel with new boots and joints for about $30 more and it is less work, less mess, and greater peace of mind. This is especially true for me because the 850 is my daughter's car and she's at school 270 miles away.

I think each axel (replaced about a year apart) took about 1.5 hours each. You may need to take it to a shop and burb off the axel nut with air tools. I think it is a 35mm nut. I tipped the mechanic $10 to have this done; I could not budge it even with a big breaker bar.

    Good luck.

      Axle Question 850 1994

Thanks for the tip but I've already replaced both outer boots last year and now only need to replace the passenger inner. I had a little trouble breaking the big nut initially but now it will come apart easily.

I only need to buy one boot so that cost, plus a little extra bench time, is my least expensive option. I just don't want to fiddle too much with the inner clip if it is not like the outer clip and I don't have the proper tool.

I've got a whole collection of c-clip pliers but it always seems that the one I need is not the one I've got.
