Well it finally went. I have the dead odometer. I didn't touch the mileage reset for probably about 3 years, but someone just did. Jiggling doesn't bring it back. Can you tell me the source for the little gear and which light bulbs to get? Are the bulbs the same as the ones for climate control? And are there the same bulbs behind the clock light that is cutting out? (no trip computer) Finally the instrument cluster doesn't look that bad to pull -is that right? I'm still debating whether to have the culprit be responsible for the repair. I'm also in a rush and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks thanks thanks

Do a Google search on "odometer gear volvo" and pick one.

The small bulbs for the clock, temp and other idiot lights use a micro bulb in a plastic holder. Radio Shack #7219 Micro Lamp, packet of 2 = $1.50 Get a bunch, because they are also used in all of the dash switch lights.

And pull out the Service bulb!

I just replaced mine. Broke right before hitting 160,000. I wasn't that scared to mess around with the dash, as I've replaced the AC evaporator and this was a piece-of-cake compared to ripping the whole thing out!

http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/odometer_fix.php - Here's the pics I followed.

I had a friend hold the dash up while I slowly guided the cluster out. Don't force anything and make sure that all the cables (two on top and one directly in back) are disconnected first. Mine has a vacuum line for the cruise control that had to be disconnected. Make sure you have a rag in place as you guide it out. You don't want to scratch the front of the cluster.

I had to purchase the gear from Marin County Volvo. It's about 1/2 the size of a dime and cost "only" $35!!! I found the 3v bulbs (yes, change them now) at a local parts store and only paid $12 for 4. Marin Volvo wanted $6 each. The two bulbs that light the digital display were also $6, but these were only available at the Volvo dealer. I had to use a photographers lupe to look at each bulbs filament. They are very small to see with the naked eye. A magnifying glass should work.

Check here for a replacement gear:

You didn't mention that any bulbs had failed. I assume you wish to relamp while the instrument cluster is removed. If so, IPD has the kit:

However, I expect that others will reply with info on economical replacement bulbs from other sources, e.g. Radio Shack.

Good luck.

maybe consider pulling the bulb on the service light too.

I don't know what the reset procedure is like on this car, but on my 1998 V70 it's a real expensive PITA because you have to have a special scan tool.

I'll be pulling my bulb if I ever take the dash apart.

Thanks everybody for all the great help. I'll take on the job this weekend.
What a great 'upgrade' to remove the service light (mine is a model year that requires a reset tool)
