Passenger A/C not working V70-XC70 2002

I posted a few weeks ago about my problem with the A/C only working on the driver's side even with the temp control switch set to the lowest temp on the passenger side. Driver's side A/C is fine.

Since then, I have used a code reader from BSR in Sweden to read the DTC output and there were no codes saved for the ECC. I then removed the glove box and saw that there were 3 servo motors on the inner passenger footwell side of the ECC unit. The upper one controls a large white rotating disk that I assume is attached to the unit that distributes the air to the different areas on command from the control unit. I tried different combinations of vent settings and this control motor responded to each of them. I also tried heat and cold and found that the lower left motor responded to this and I assumed that it was opening and closing a vent to allow heat into the system. I could not see any evidence of movement of the motor on the lower right but there wasn't anything to see moving so I don't know how significant this is. I am not sure it is the vents but I thought it might be. Does anyone have any info on the ECC that might help me with this?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Gary

The large in at the bottom of the firewall is for recirculation.

It is the top one that is probably bothering you. If the motor works, great. Park it in the "closed" position and remove the motor. Leave the key out of the car until you have put the motor back, you don't want to get things out of sync.
The vent motor has a metal square peg in the center that fits into a plastic fitting on the actual vent. Sometimes, the plastic will crack or crumble and now slips over the metal. Brickboarders have been known to reglue the plastic and make use of baling wire to keep things tight. There is no good way to replace the vent flap.

Is that a nice scanner? Does it do real time stuff?

      Hi Klaus:

I was able to remove the damper motors but the system of connecting the motor shaft to the vent is not the same design as the earlier models and therefore the fix described for them doesn't work. Thanks for all your input.

The BSR scanner seems to work quite well. When I first hooked it up a few days ago, there were four codes saved which were quite random and had to do with the driver's door and mirror. Since I wasn't having any issues, I just noted the codes and cleared them. They haven't returned.

The scanner does not do real time stuff but you can watch it seemingly access all the systems. It also allows you to clear codes and to reset the service light.

Thanks again for your input. This may be a dealer problem but I always try my best!

I finally gave and took it to the dealer. It turned out to be low on refrigerant! I had looked at all the more complex issues and it brought back to me how important it is to start simple. The frustrating part is that I checked it with one of the simple gauges that you get with the R134a kits and it had checked out. That was the most expensive charge I've had.

        Thanks for all your help.

        Gary

Sorry to hear the bad news about the newer P2 models :) Why can't volvo just leave the trashy systems alone so that we can make them better! Beware of the dealer, his first "fix" will be to replace the ECC with a download - not cheap. Not one mechanic will be familiar with the HVAC system, especially when there are no codes.

That scanner will not work with 2008+ models if I remember correctly. But, it does the whole car which is great.
