850 GLT AC Compressor Clutch- "Bread Clip Fix' 850

I am reposting this message because the responses "danced" around my original request. This "fix" has been posted here and at other Volvo Sites and has been met with great success. However there are not specific posts as to 1.) Where "exactly to place the shims" on the AC clutch, and where "exactly" to measure the "gap" with a feeler gauge. Also Placement of a bonding agent "exact" placement on the shim, one side both sides, etc. finally the shape of the "Shim". I also requested someone post photos so 850 Owners if they chose to utilize this procedure would have a better understanding of the process. There is an indepth photo guide on one of the other Volvo message boards that provides the detail to replace the shims on the shaft behind the ac cltuch-this procedure requires removal of the clutch assembly from the vehicle.

Some prefer the "easier and less expensive method" by not having to remove the clutch or pay a mechanic. If we pay a mechanic we would not need this message board, especially if your 850 requires additional costly work and you are nursing it along for another year. Our government may pay us "4500.00 Dollars for these vehicles for trade-ins on US cars......
Your detailed responses would be appreciated-740gt

850 GLT AC Compressor Clutch- "Bread Clip Fix' 850

I am sorry you feel that way about the Brickboard and the free advice you get from it. Like you, many of us cannot afford an airline ticket to your town to give you free mechanical help. The best we can do is to describe things in words and ocassional pictures, the BB doesn't have an 850/70 FAQ.

The compressor clutch rides on 3 metal posts, if you look closely. The gap can be measured around the outside edge of the clutch cover plate, easily descernable by pushing the clutch plate with your fingers on any part of the edge. Of course, to see the clutch you will need to remove the air guide under the car.

The plastic bread clip is a neat idea, you could also try to wrap a wire around each of the 3 posts if you can get it at an even height. The plastic clips can be made out of most anything and could be glued to the clutch plate, which is probably easier than trying to make a roundish slot to fit around the posts so the plastic doesn't fall off.

BTW, you don't have to pay a mechanic to remove the clutch plate, just fashion your own puller and remove it your self.
