Advice on 99 V70 driver side front door replacement. V70-XC70 1999

Hi, all,

Greetings!

Saw a door from 98 S70 on Craigslist and thinking to buy it to replace my crushed driverside door. I am planning to disconnect the battery before door swapping. Is there any consequence doing this kind of door change? Does it need computer reconfiguration afterwards?

Any input will be very appreicated.

Thanks,
Paul

    Paul:
Your original post spoke of disconnecting the battery before removing the door. I've removed the driver's door on my '98 a few times to facilitate repair to the door "swing stop", and have found that pulling the big electrical connector near the top hinge does it all - no need to disconnect the battery. I found a few other things associated with doors which might interest you as well: I found it necessary to replace the window slide channel at the trailing edge of the door - a flange where a securing screw went through had broken off. The replacement part was redesigned in this area with a good deal more metal in that spot, suggesting that this had been a problem area in the past. I've posted a few more points regarding that repair elsewhere in the forum, and a quick search will come up with that stuff readily. As well. I'm still working on a fix to the bracket which fastens the door swing stop to the frame - this bracket is spot-welded to the frame, and the weld tends to break loose due to the stress when the door is CLOSING. Lots of stuff on this fix scattered throughout the forum as well. I use one of those padded wheeled "moving dollies" when I'm taking the door off - it can be done by one person, but slooowly, and having some type of wheels to allow removal of the loose door away from the car can save you more work in the end.

Go ahead and get the door if it is the correct color.

I am not sure if the window switches are "computerized" in your 1999, but if that is the case, then just use your current switches.

Beware, the door is very heavy!!!!! You will need a helper or a milk crate to help hold the door up to put it on the hinges.

      Thank you very much, Klaus.

I went but did not get the replacement. a long story. I guess I have to live with the dented door for a while. It still is a funtional door. the problem is the window can only be a half way down.

      Enjoy your remaining weekend.

Can you take your door panel off and then hit it with a 2X4 and a sledge? With the door closed, of course, you don't want the door to swing open and break the hinge :)

          Thanks again.

I tried but had a hard time to remove the silver part (with window regulator and motor attached?) Also, main dent part is at lower side of the door (where the door stip locates) so it is not accessible from inside of the door.

I saw a couple of listings on Craigslist saling 2004 v70R and 2004 XC70. do they worth looking?

          Best,
          Puhong

The new body style 2001+ will not work. You can go older.

              Thanks, Klaus,

              Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. I meant to ask you on buying a 2004 V70R (75K miles) or 2004 XC70 (65K) to replace my 99 v70.
              best,

Well, that's different!!! A nice way to replace a bent door.

The R would be my choice, of course. 300bhp, lower to the ground, and maintenance heavy because it is high strung.

The XC has 200bhp, 8 inces of ground clearance, but nothing to write home about. It will get you everywhere you want to go, in comfort.

Thanks again, Klaus. I am going to check them out soon.

I remember you said in your earlier posting that small parts like bolts, nuts, etc. from places such as FCPgroton are not good enough. Can you suggest other sources (other than local dealers) for purchasing?

                  thanks.

I prefer what the dealer sells me because it is not going to break my bank and any bolt that gets torqued + nn degrees must be replaced with new. My experience with FCPG is with strut mount bolts which were noticeably smaller in diameter and nut size. The 3 small nuts on top of the strut tower were also a little weak looking.

Lightbulbs, are autoparts store items only.
