Electric Motor Noise from Console Area V70-XC70 2001

Fellow Bricksters,

I have an issue with our 2001 V70.. It has an electric motor noise from the area behind the console (where the CD, air controls are). It is a humming noise that is noticeble when driving and will only stop after the car has been stopped and turned off after a couple of minutes, Sounds like a ectric motor whirring noise however to be honest this is only a guess. Any help appreciated.

May be completely unrelated but I get a noise from that area that sounds more like an electric hydraulic pump, seems related to brake pedal operation and maybe also transmission shifting. I have the "skid control service required" light also so I think it's ABS related. I need to have the dealership check that message out but I'd rather hit myself in the hand with a hammer than believe anything they tell me. I've never heard any noises after turning the key off except the radiator cooling fan and I can't hear that unless the door is open or I'm around the front of the vehicle when that fan is running.

There is a small fan/motor just to the left of the ECC which reads the cabin temperature. To isolate the noise, try turning the blower speed from auto to just barely on and the air direction to something other than auto which should turn off the temperature fan. If the noise stops, it is time to clean the temp sensor.

Klaus,

OK here is something extra that may help.. Tried the mentioned advice, however it happens when there is no air conditioning on also. It sounds exactly like the electric motor noise that you here when you turn the car off that last for a couple of minutes around that centre console area. Except it is a bit louder than normal. What is in that area is there are any more electric motors in this area except for the Temp Sensor.

Thanks in advance

Hmmm. You have a low pressure turbo, which is always spinning when the engine is on. The turbo does take a few seconds to stop spinning when you turn the engine off, and it is directly on the opposite side of the firewall from the console centre.
The noise only happens when the car is moving or the gas pedal is depressed? That could be the high pitched noise of the turbo????

There are vent motors back there, but they should only move when the heat/AC changes.

Klaus,

The V70 is Non-Turbo, so the plot thickens, I think that the vent motors may be the culprit. I may take the console cover off on the weekend and go for a drive and this may clear things up???

Hello Stig, Could it be the heater/AC fan running a drying cycle? I love the idea of blow drying the corrosion-prone evaporator; it's the randomness I don't like. What parameters does the machinery use to initiate a drying cycle? When the noise is heard could you pull one or another fuse to isolate the source? Kira

I've been hearing something similar and thinking maybe it's my ABS module acting up ready itself to die....

I look forward to hearing others advice.
