abs control unit replacement 850 1996

I am about to replace my abs control unit on my 96 855 turbo (with tracs). The volve parts people counseled me to not do it myself (for fear I may screw up other software or mechanical systems, etc). Has anyone installed this themselves, and do I have anything to worry about? I'd rather save the $200 in service fees, and it is an easy install.

Thank you

Re: abs control unit replacement 850 1996

I have had an ongoing, intermittent ABS "thing". Is it so that our cars mainly need new CU's, or is it something cheaper to check first?

Since I bought my car ( a year ago) the ABS-light has lit up a few times.

First time at the dealer, the checked all the connectors (wich had water in them) and cleaned them. Second time, they were going to do some rewiring (a kit that was made for this car). The dealer found out that the previous owner already did that, so they left that. Instead, they were measuring around on the circuit, cleaning connectors etc.

They said that they did not know if this would fix it, since they really did not know the source of the problem.

I was told that if the problem continues, they would have to consult the Volvo importer for other known sources.

So far, this only cost me an hour of workshop bills, but I suspect that next visit will include starting to change parts.

    -The symptomes are:

Before my first "fix", the light would light up now and then while braking somewhat hard under wet or dry conditions. Sometimes (or always) the ABS function would fail until next startup.

After my first visit, on a warm vacationtrip, the ABS light could come up when idling on a hot place (hot sun and engaged AC). It would go out when restarting, only to come back on.

After my second visit, the problem has been similar to what I first expirienced.

What things should be done, in what order?

    Thank you!

    Erlend

andy: I guess enquiring minds want to know: what was the diagnosis that led to the recco to replace the ABS black box? I have seen problems like leaks (chronic) fixed by backing off and then properly re-threading on, and properly re-tightening, the banjo fittings to the unit: what is your problem (your CAR'S problem)?--PD. (cleaning off the sensors, etc., as part of PM, is good self-defense/maintenance as well)

Re: abs control unit replacement 850 1996

That's a really good question guys, what lead to the diagnosis?

For me it was a series of things:

      - First, check the codes. Mine were 314 and 324. Right rear sensor signal problems.

      - Next start at the least expensive part and work my way up. I replaced the rear sensors to no avail.

      - Then I traced the pins and found that by wiggling the pin specific connectors in the CU, the problem would go away.

      - The clincher for me was to talk to a number of mechs from different Volvo repair places. All of them said that in 95% of the cases with a right rear wheel sensor signal interupt code, that the CU had to be replaced.

Now I'm saving my pennies to purchase a ew CU.

      Hope this helps.

      Scott

        1. My diagnosis also started with right rear wheel sensor errors. I inspected all the sensors, as well as the wiring, and found no problems, though the sensors were dirty. I have experimented with cleaning the contacts for the ABS CU and it's connectors. Since then, the error lights have stayed off for the most part, though they have lit once or twice. For me (like Scott) was a series of discussions with Volvo mechanics who said that the ABS CU was the root cause.

        2. For Jim, no I am not selling the reservoir.

          Andy,

I'd definitely like to see how everything turns out. I think I need to replace the CU on my V70 and was wondering how hard the job is for a

          DIY.

            Okay, abs control unit report:

The replelacement took all of 30 minutes, tops. It requires the removal / replacement of 4 long, small bolts (i used a 4mm socket wrench) and i also disconnected the battery leads to be sure. I returned the old ABS CU to the dealer as there was a $50 core charge. Total net cost: $369. Seems to work fine, no codes (yet!) and that was it. Thank you to everyone who dropped me a line.

Re: abs control unit replacement 850 1996

Is this just the replacement of the "black box" under the master cylinder?

If so, the replacement is two harnesses and four long thin bolts. It's very simple. You do have to line up the ABS pistons, but that's easy. The only possible thing I can think of that you could damage is to bend one of the pins to the main wire harness.

It shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes with the right sized socket wrench. It's a small metric, though I don't remember the size.

If they are quoting you 3 hours of work, then maybe there is something else besides the "black box" control unit?

Scott - Thank you for your email. The replacement is pretty straight forward. However, the volvo dealership alluded to the potential for screwing up the software by replacing it improperly. My approach would be to pump the brakes, disconnect the battery and replace the black box, as you described. I just want to ensure i am not missing something.

Re: abs control unit replacement 850 1996

Hmmm... that's interesting. Maybe there is something in the replacement that has the potential to goof up the software. I've only removed my CU to get the part number and check connections. When I did so I did not see any switches or anything that could possibly effect "software". That leads me to wonder if the brakes need to be set a certian way before/after/during the replacement?

Can anyone comment on this one? I've got to do the same replacement soon too so it would be nice to know.

Andy, where did you get the new CU and, if I can ask, how much did you pay?

        Thanks

Re: abs control unit replacement 850 1996

I paid $~360 for one at the dealer (440 less a 20% discount). I don't think there is a swtich that you are missing - i thought they were referring to potential shorts/electrical surges on contact, which is why i will disconnect the battery. I don't know anything about the brake positioning theory, though i can't imagine how to set it differently.

Re: abs control unit replacement 850 1996

Did by any chance your replacement come needed because of a leak

in the resevoir? If not I would like to buy the old resevoir.

My works o.k., I just have a leak in the res somewhere.

    Thanks. Jim Trombetti
