Is it really worth the performance? S70 98

I'm looking for some feedback an ECU upgrade for a 98 T5. Is the upgrade really worth what you get in performance? Does it cut down on reliability? What areas are a concern when doing this type of an upgrade and what's the best product on the market?

I appreciate any input from those that have some experience with this.

I think that it is worth it if you want more performance out of your S70 T5. It all depends on what you want, but a chip will give you a significant raise in horsepower numbers, and it really doesn't cost very much. There are a lot of places that sell chips for the S70 T5.

Don, In my opinion the ecu upgrade is worth the performance. I did the ipd ecu upgrade with the T.M.E. exhaust and noticed a great increase in performance. I live near the ipd headquarters and personally discussed any possible drawbacks with these upgrades. The only problem that could possibly arise, is if your motor was putting out 300+ horsepower, it could lead to automatic transmissions being strained. With these upgrades, your problems arising from the performance enhancement should be next to none.

Ananda, IPD made sure to keep the boost at or under 10 psi. They stated that this boost was very safe and should cause no excessive wear with proper maintenance. By the way my V70R came with a stock setting of only 1.5 psi before blow off. That was one the reasons they asked if I wanted to adjust the wastegate.

Are you sure about those numbers?

I can't imagine your V70R only came with 1.5 psi. Stock, it should be making 261hp. I can't see how the engine could be making that much power on 1.5 psi of boost.

How much horsepower gain did you get and is there a website that I can view this on?

        Don,

I just found an interesting site that might answer some of your questions:

        Volvotuning.com

        check it out...

Re: Is it really worth the performance? S70 98

Is it worth the performance? In a word, "YES". The ECU is the single most effective "add-on" for performance. I installed the TME unit, and although it was recommended that it be run with an aftermarket exhaust, I could not afford it at the time, so it is installed a capella. My '98 is an automatic, so the "off the line" performance increase is not as noticable as it would be with your 5 spd (due to my not being able to rev the engine to launch), but once the RPM hits 3500, it slingshots--a real rush of power. Personally, I believe that it would be much more advantageous in your application. But make no mistake, I will not be swapping back to the stock unit...I enjoy the ability to pass slow traffic on a whim.

The question becomes: What can be done to keep the front from "hunting" under full acceleration? Anyone?
