Odometer not working 850 1997

My son reported that the odometer stopped working on his '97 850 wagon. Speedometer works. He has a habit of resetting his trip mileage while car is in motion.

Then you can show him how to replace the plastic gear, while you have a beer and watch. The gear retails for about $25, make sure he buys it.

It is bad to reset while in motion? I did not know this was an issue - bad me!

Prior to 1998, the odometer was mechanical and resetting it while in motion canpossibly catch a plastic tooth in a bad position and help cause the failure.

You need not worry with your cars :) I did find that trying to reset the trip miles to zero on the computer while driving could be frustrating, watching the numbers slowly advance to 9999. Doing this while stopped was much better!

Is the gear easily accessible from under the dash or you need to remove the dashboard?

+1 on the bulbs. Save yourself the trouble of pulling the cluster twice, replace the four big ones while you're in there. Those old bulbs don't like being jostled around.

Also a good time to replace bulbs.
