2000 s80 2.9 or 1996 850 GLT S80 2000

I am looking for a safe and reliable car for my son. Both cars cost the same, about 4k. The s80 has 97k miles and the 850 has 103k. I have read that the s80 T6 has a lot of problems but it is a newer car and with lower mileage. I was wondering if the majority of the problems seen with the s80 is with the T6 model? Both cars are exceptionally clean. I would really like something that will last him through college. What do you think?

It is time for a new T belt for the S80, not cheap.

If your son has mechanical potential and a AAA card, get the 850. If you have a large savings account and a AAA card and a dealer close to school, get the S80.

I just bought my daughter a Subaru for school. She is neither a mechanic or a hard driver, she just needs something that starts all of the time, reliably. Plus Ohio gets a lot of snow.

Hi,
Klaus is right(as always).
Personal experience: my daughter bought a 96 850 5 spd 5 yrs ago after 4 years with a 242T that Dad bought her(she wanted a Mustang!). The 850 has been an excellent car & just the usual maintenance stuff over the years. She has now finished university & still loves the 850 tho` she finds the S60`s appealing.
Good luck!
Rich
