Re: Volvo recommended synthetic oils C70 1999

I've seen this posted all over the web. I'm not sure where the oil data comes from, but it is not correct. The first time I saw it posted was about 2 years ago, and as an Amsoil dealer I decided to at least check the numbers against the Amsoil specs. Guess what? They are way different. Then I started comparing the other brand's numbers. Just wrong or very outdated I guess.

I think the graph depicting gear oil vs. motor oil viscosity is quite informative for most folks.

Volvo has a list of approved engine oils including synthetics but it's a long list. It's available through Volvos VEN intranet and a knowledgeable service manager should be able to find you that info if he wanted to and print it, I've seen it recently.

Do you happen to remember if the Castrol or Quaker State synthetics were

listed?

Re: Volvo recommended synthetic oils V70-XC70 1998

I've had reasonable luck with Valvoline Synpower and Castrol Syntec as well as Mobil 1.

It seems that even the worst syntthetic would still provide better protection over the best non-syn.

What I'm unclear about is whether or not the synthetic blends are really worth anything. Educated opinions, anyone?

Most turbo Volvo owners put Mobil-1 or Amsoil into their cars. Those are two of the best synthetics out there.

They dont. They just say the use of synthetic oil is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for driving in areas with temp. extremes(hot or cold), towing a trailer for long distance, or prolonged driving in mountainous areas.

Meeting API (SJ, SJ/CF, or SJ/energy) specs of course.

I would use Mobil-1, or Amsoil

MY2001 V70 manual recommends Mobile 1 for high stress driving.

Re: Where did you see this printed? C70 1999

It's on page 124 of my 2001 V70 manual, says "For petrol turbo charged engines, the use of synthetic oil complying with oil quality requirements such as Volvo synthetic oil or Mobil 1, is recommended." In another area it says synthetic may provde additional protection depending on driving habits. It also says the retailer does not use synthetic during routine maintenance. Another section says "synthetic oils are recommeneded for driving in areas of sustained temperature extremes, when towing, and for prolonged driving in mountains"
