Put in Park, Take the Foot of the Brake, Car Sways Back & Forth 850 1997

Hi,

Not sure if this is normal or not, maybe all cars do this, but when I come to a stop, especially on a small decline, and I put the car in park, then let off the brake, the car seems to roll forward a few inches, stop then rocks back and forth a little (front to rear). I usually just hit the brake to stop it from doing that. I noticed when I was sitting on the bumper of the car, that you could kind of move the car back and forth. Is this sort of free play normal? If not, what causes this?

I think I ask odd questions. ")

Thanks.

Michael

    A third reply!

It's a wiki article about the pawl/pin and how it locks the transmission, yada yada...

It's normal. BUT, you should always use the parking brake just to reduce tension on the parking "pawl" or pin. Using the transmission to hold the 3200lb car on an incline is not good for it, that's why the parking brake is installed.
Get in the good habit of pulling the brake handle up hard before shifting into park and removing your foot from the brake pedal. That way, when you shift from park, the shifter will move easily instead of being "forced" out of park.
Besides, using the parking brake will keep the cables free and work the brake shoes, eliminating future maintenance on both items.

Wow, I didn't know there was such a thing as a parking pawl. Interesting. What if you are on a flat street and park, follow the same practice? I typically don't park on a hill. I park on the street facing my driveway (kind of a cul-de-sac), and there's a little dip from the road to the sidewalk. So, it's a slight decline. I will try this practice more often, and like you said it's good for the e-brake parts, especiallly since I havn't been using it much. ")

      Thanks for the info.

Not too odd of a question. Here's an odder answer!

Sounds normal to me. Your car will move slightly until the parking pawl (perhaps I'm the only one who calls it that) is engaged. Basically that's what keeps the car in "park" not "rolling away".

I always use the parking brake since I can't stand the bouncing against whatever that device really is. I'm sure it's designed such that it will never fail but I just can't get the thought out of my head that some day it won't rock back, that instead there'll be a "PING" of that part snapping.
