Delima time. My daughter will be going back to college next fall as a senior, she will need to have a car.
So, today, I found 2.
2004 Volvo V70R, passion Red with all of the goodies and only 22K miles for $18,500. Good looker, I haven't driven it yet.
2004 Audi A6 Avant(wagon), slate gray, 4 heated seats and rear window shades, 39K miles for $17,000.
Both cars are safe, the Audi awd is a little better, the V70R has a faster top end speed. My daughter is not into speed, the car will be parked outside, it snows a lot in Ohio, and the car must start when asked. It might be parked for 4 weeks without being looked at.
My heart says Volvo, but my head says Audi. Care to chime in?

Park out in the snow 4 weeks. She's not a car person, you have written. She needs something like a Subaru, basic and dependable, with inexpensive maintenance (well, at least compared to Volvo or Audi). Or find a Ford Explorer for her if you insist on the AWD thing and you want more steel tonnage.

Klaus, unless your daughter is a better mechanic you are, I wouldn't even say Audi, much less buy one.
My nephew had an A4 1.8T and an extended warranty when the alternator went out. There are only 3 dealers in NC and only one alternator on the east coast. When he was told to bring in his car for the new alternator, it seems that the only one in the east was the wrong one. So the dealer sold him a new battery to get him back home, 90 miles away. What a crock! He finally got the right alternator on his second 180 mile trip to the dealer. Then he sold the A4.
Get her a V8 Explorer AWD They're cheaper, almost as reliable as a Volvo and able to haul anything. Parts are readily available and every mechanic in the US knows Fords. The V8s are real work horses and will outlast the V6s. :)

While both cars are very nice for me, they are too much for her. Subaru Forester, Honda CRV, and slightly older Volvos are still in the running.
I would not like to see her driving an SUV, top heavy and unsafe. Sure, Ford makes a nice one but it is just tooooo big.

Hi Klaus,
to be fair I don't know anything about the Audi, but, I did think about them before I bought my 98 S70 T5.
However I was put off by the All wheel drive, having heard that AWD cars require all the tires to be exactly the same dimensions. Meaning if you have a half used up set of tires you need to buy 4 new tires rather than just replace one, plus I wondered about the extra complexity of the AWD system.
On the plus side AWD might be safer up there in Ohio winters?
Tough choice

Awgh!
well since you like doing brakes, you'll get to have a lot of fun with the Audi.
Let us know what happens

My wife has an A4 for a commuter car. The brakes are easy, just like volvo except there are no rear drums to worry about. I just remembered, the front brakes have wires to indicate excessive wear, and the plastic electrical plugs are a pain.
I refuse to work on an Audi engine, there is just no room! It is a 3 hour job to change the thermostat, but 1 hour to do the oil separator. Forget doing the timing belt.

Why don't spend $8000 on a nice VOLVO for your daughter and then spend $10500 on a nice VOLVO for yourself?!
...and you call yourself a Volvoholic.

Daughter decided on a 2008 Subaru Outback with 15K miles. It has everything she wants on it and she won't be afraid to park it in a parking lot.
I like it, a little anemic but still drives good.

When my wife retires, my ambition is to "down size" our castle and get a place with a 2 car garage. Then find a small building which will hold a half dozen junkers and fill it full of Volvos in various states of repair :)
I looked at the A6 wagon today, very nice... too clean, someone spilled antifreeze on the engine (hmmmm) and the oil dipstick showed about 1 quart low and very clean oil. I think I'll pass.
Then, there is this 2003 XC with 102K for less than 9K. Gotta go look!!
