I just ordered my new radiator, therm., and new clips & o rings from fcp. I have a few questions before i begin the work. How do I remove those atf line clips? What is the total coolant capacity? How much trans fluid is there in the cooler? What type of trans fluid will i need to top it off? And the last is: My car has about 140K miles. I bought it with about 120K on it. I have no idea if the trans fluid has ever been changed. Am I playing with fire to flush it now? I have heard with high miles and not much maintenace, a complete flushing could trigger lots of problems. Any input to that??

Those clips spread apart to come off. There is a "tool" to get them off, I just used needle nose pliers and a screwdriver to spread the clamp and slide it back. Put the new ones on the hose, don't try to wrap it over a connected hose because they will fly all over the garage never to be seen again :)

Only about a cup of fluid in the tranny cooler, if that much.

You have a 5 speed auto tranny and will need to use 3309 fluid. Mobile makes it. Buy a case to flush the tranny. Use the IPD method and pump out/replace 2 quarts at a time using the engine to run the pump. Older trannies get clobbered when they get flushed via machine with too much pressure.

The engine takes 1 gallon of Volvo antifreeze and 1 gallon of distilled water.

Klaus, Is volvo coolant that much better than others. For the last few years I have been using Hepu brand. Is volvo better than that one? How much is it from the dealer?

There are those who buy stuff at $9/gallon. Volvo charges around $17. But, you only need one gallon of antifreeze with a gallon of distilled water, so the cost isn't outrageous. Much less than changing the oil and for every other year?
