Identifying Intake and exhaust shafts 850 1997

Hey folks

I've confused my intake and exhaust shafts. Any suggestions on how to definitively tell the difference? Also, When locking the shafts to install the tappets... how do I know which lobes should be up/down...?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

N.

OK here goes:

I have an 850 tore down in my shop, but its late and its raining. So do this, if there is no identifying marks, place the cams in the slots and line up the timing marks on TDC at the plastic cover. The cam lobes on number one will have just closed on intake and about to open the exhaust valve. If the reverse is true, swap the cams! That's how an old shadetree mechanic would figure it out. Worked on Jags and Fiats anyway. All you have to know the direction of the rotation and I believe you will find that to be clockwise!

Good luck. Those timing marks are very small on the 850.
