I have a 96' 850 wagon and the rear hatch will not stay up. Is there any sort of adjustment for this or do I have to replace the gas dampener or what ever it is that holds it up?

The hatch struts need to be replaced. Quite easy to do after the plastic cover is off. I suggest getting the slightly more expensive OEM struts for better fit and operation. The online parts stores carry them. There is no adjustment.
