Rear bearings 850 1996

Some time this summer, I'll need to replace rear brake discs and pads. Our car has 160,000+ miles on it, purchased used at about 120,000 if I recall correctly; we've never serviced the rear wheel hubs, and have no idea if anyone else did before we bought it.

Is this a part that you service when it makes noise and not until then; and would I have time to get the parts and schedule my time for the maintenance, or is it a sudden death kind of thing?

The parts aren't cheap - replacing both hubs would about triple my parts costs for the disc/pad replacement.

    Rear bearings 850 1996

For the FWD cars, the rear bearings usually last forever. When the bearing do go, it is a gradual thing and will give you plenty of time before replacement is required.
The AWD have a shorter life span, but same noise when they go bad.

If you still have the original drum shoes, I would suggest getting new ones and associated hardware. Fairly cheap. Remember to slack the cables at the center console before trying to remove the rear rotors.
Get new spring clips for the rear brakes, yours are probably very rusty by now.
