Check Engine light V70-XC70 1999

Help!

Yesterday after driving 75 miles my Check Engine Light came on . Reading in the book they say that this may be emission related.

However my engine is not running smoothly and when car is standing and I rev up- it appears that black smoke emits.

Any thoughts and suggestions welcome

George

Re: Check Engine light V70-XC70 1999

Only way to know for sure is to take it in and have the codes read, but from past experience with these symptoms, mass air flow sensor or electronic throttle module. Possible fuel pressure or o2 sensor problem as well.

Dear Bob,

Thanks for your note.

Is this a common complaint with Volvo- My wagon was running quietly like a kitten until this happen -Now its as noisy as anything.

Is this code reading a requisite? I am new to this board and see that folks refer to codes etc.

George

Re: Check Engine light V70-XC70 1998

When that happened to me on my 98 XC it was because I hadn't gone past two clicks when screwing my gas cap back on after fueling. I turned the cap 3 clicks and the light went out. It has something to do with the emissions diagnosis. At least on a 98 that is so.
