Unless there is some affirmative indication that you have issues inside the engine, there is never a need to do preventative maintenance inside the engine.

Your body shell is going to rust out. Do you replace the body shell as a preventative?

Hi ken.

Not quite, the connecting rod bearings are a WEAR item. they do wear out and if one fails it ruins your engine..well the crank at least which is toast.
and to replace its pretty easy and cheap being a fwd car and dropping the pan is the hardest part.
Your rotting from rust body comparison makes no sense, Me replacing my connecting rod bearings would prob come to a grand total of less then 200. bearings, new bearing caps. oil gasket. and my time

NO, no, no! That is the most stable part of your engine, why introduce a headache? Removing the head is probably the worst thing you ever want to do to your engine.

A better idea is to drop the oil pan and replace the oil pickup rings and clean out any sludge. IF, you have nothing better to do. Remember, it uses a liquid gasket and the bolts are different sizes.

You are using synthetic oil, correct?

Im not acctually, i got this beauty with 180k and figured it was too late for the benefits of going synthetic, and im contemplating replacing the connecting rod bearings only because im under the assumption that i can do this by just dropping the pan. no head removal. the crank would stay in place.

I had to remove the head in my 1994 850NA due to a broken valve. I have owned this car since new, and always used dyno oil. I was surprised to find that piston, rings, camshafts and valve lifters looked like new. No visible wear . Cylinder walls still show original polishing markings. Only thing that had was not perfect was exactly only one rod bearing on Cyl 2 that had some scratches that could be felt if you passed the finger nail on it. So I decided to replace them and also the piston rings for reassurance. And of course, oil sump o-rings and water pump ( which by the way wsa the original one, with no evidence of leaks or wear).

200k miles. Always taken good care of, mileage built up mostly in highly jammed Sao Paulo traffic with long extended idling times. Also, which is also surprising, the Brazilian gasoline has a 25% ethanol content, which apparently did no affect the engine noticeably.I my opinion this engine will last very long, but valve seals are not good for much more than 200k miles.

ps: there is a guy in the 200 forum that just did this and seems to have managed to save his engine, as the bearings he took out where almost gone.

And he had other issues with that red block engine. Don't go anal with the maint, unless you run with only 2 quarts of oil. His car is slightly older than your 95.
