Sunroof rattles when closed....never in open or vent position V70-XC70

It does not leak.

The front edge seems to be tight and rattle-free, yet the rear trailing edge has play (up and down) and rattles over bumps. Both the front and rear edges of the glass panel are perfectly level with the roof line. They look perfect.

Is this is a simple adjustment or does it require removing the panel or the headliner.........oh-no.

Our 2001 was doing the same thing when we bought it. I opened it partially and felt around and pulled out a long metal strip that had been glued to the back edge of the glass. When I got it out, the rattling was reduced (the strip was bouncing around), but not stopped. I think the purpose of the strip was in the closed position it keeps the glass from bouncing up. From the outside, I can bump the sunroof with my hand an it will bounce and rattle.

Ours does the same thing. No noise when open. Only when closed. When the shade is pulled, it is more quiet. Roads in TN are not as bad as MI and until the wife complains enough, I won't pull the headliner and pull the sunroof to fix it.

A few years ago, I had to pull the sunroof our of our 850 wagon and not a difficult job, but did take 5~6 hours to get it out and back in. Ended up with a few dirty finger prints on the headliner.

It sounds like yours is the same as mine.

The SR is not hard to work on, just 4 screws hold it on. Your problem might be the slides, which have plastic on the bottom edge. The plastic might be worn or missing altogether.

Thanks Klaus, you were right it wasn't difficult to find the screws and I snugged them up a bit and was very careful not to overtighten them.

I raised the trailing edge so that it slightly higher than it was, by loosening the screws and repositioning the glass. The problem is that it still rattles.

Can the slides be built up, or can the plastic be changed? I pulled up the parts in VADIS and I see a piece on each side that the screws for the glass go into. The only slides I see are parts of the frame that screws into the roof. Is there another fix?

Junk yard is the only solution.

Flip up the rear of the SR and try rattling it by hand. Perhaps not 100% up. It could be something else that rattles. There is supposed to be a thin rubber strip attached to the bottom of the roof, or the topside of the liner, that could have slipped off its position...

I will look for the rubber strip.

Thanks for your help.

On a positive note, I have trying to find bad roads to drive on to get the roof panel to rattle (not especially hard to do here in Michigan) and the sound is far less noticeable now that the screws are snug and the trailing edge is slightly elevated....I guess it will be okay for awhile.
