Compatible Power Steering Fluid S80 2005

I need to top off the P/S fluid just a bit. The owners manual calls out:

"Volvo synthetic power steering fluid (Pentosin CHF 11S) P/N 1161529, or equivalent."

Is the "equivalent" pretty much any synthetic? Do I need to read the bottle and look for one that says "Pentosin CHF 11S"? (That sounds like something they'd shoot into you through an I.V.)

Thanks.

I'm probably repeating information already posted, but FWIW, it's a specific oil and can't be mixed with other Pentosin number(s). I don't know how many different fluids they make anyway, but it's a specific fluid. I've been down this road before with Audis. Audi, by the way, appears thoroughly incapable of building a power steering system that doesn't leak, so owners are very familiar with this kind of fluid.

Having said that, there seem to be some people with older Saabs, Audis, and BMWs, who have experimented with synthetic ATF in place of the Pentosin (probably after a flush). The Pentosin is apparently excellent for low temperature applications, which makes sense as these are Scandinavian cars, after all. Barring temperature extremes, the synthetic ATF might work fine. Saab says that ATF is OK in an emergency, apparently.

Would I experiment with my car? Probably not. I never messed around with the Audi either. I just bought a liter every year or two, and the leak eventually stopped as the car aged.

I decided against "experimenting" also. Got the the actual Volvo labelled stuff from my local indy. So far no fluid on the garage floor.

Call FCP Groton. You won't see it on their web page, but if you ask they have it. Was one of the better prices I could find about a year ago.

I ended up paying $15.25 (or $16.17 including tax) from Professional Swedish Car Repair. Out-of-towners would have to pay shipping. (770) 509-7900

      Thanks, Jerry.

My local Volvo independent repair shop said they'll sell me a liter can for "around $15". I'll stop by and pick it up after work and see what they really charge me.
