intake manifold is off, now questions 850 1994

Once the intake manifold was off, the problem with the breather box was that it is broken. A few things that raise questions are:

1) the floor of the intake ports are clean. The walls and tops are covered with slick black varnish. Is this normal or is the fuel pressure regulator dying ?

2) what does the vacuum actuator, located between intake runners #3 and #4 of the intake manifold do ? What is the purpose of the little trapdoors in the intake manifold ? What happens if the whole lot is siezed up ?

3) the hole in the block where the lower hose from the oil seperator box connects is 3/4 full of crud. Where does this passage lead ? Is there a good way to clean it out without getting a bunch of junk in the crankcase ?

4) how does the breather box get broken ?

Thanks

Greg

intake manifold is off, now questions 850 1994

After hearing about the baseball pitcher that got killed in CA, I decided to buy my daughter a Volvo. I don't know if I can trust Mary's 1994 :) so I am going to try talking my daughter into a 2005 V70. If it is red, of course. Silly artists!

      Klaus,

Good choice. That must have been quite a hit.

I think that this 850 will need some regular attention to make it reliable. The vacuum actuator for the intake manifold flaps is a chore to get by the 'rear' knock sensor. Hopefully I will get this thing together and running this weekend. I was just reading over on the RWD board that the FCP oil seperator boxes are junk. :( Hopefully Madeline sells it before too long.

BTW Mary has the V70 ('04) and loves it. It will be interesting to see how many tickets your daughter collects with a red one.

      Greg

1 and 2 answered quite well. I used a screw driver and carefully reamed out the very hard crud. Any particles that fell into the block went to the oil filter.
Your breather box might have been partially filled with water from condensation and frozen.
Note the position of the vacuum lines on top of the breather box, the diagrams are wrong!!! The line from the valve cover goes to the center of the breather box.

    >>1) the floor of the intake ports are clean. The walls and tops are covered with slick black varnish. Is this normal or is the fuel pressure regulator dying ?<<

It is normal. On the cars where I have sucked a third of a can of seafoam through the intake it has been cleaner than the cars that I have not seafoamed.

    >>2) what does the vacuum actuator, located between intake runners #3 and #4 of the intake manifold do ? What is the purpose of the little trapdoors in the intake manifold ? What happens if the whole lot is seized up ?<<

That is an intake tuning system that was only used on '93 and '94 models that had the LH 3.2 / EZ-129K ECU systems. It was designed to improve low end torque at lower engine RPMs and then fully open at high revs.

    >>3) the hole in the block where the lower hose from the oil seperator box connects is 3/4 full of crud. Where does this passage lead ? Is there a good way to clean it out without getting a bunch of junk in the crankcase ?<<

It goes to the crankcase and it must be cleaned. An oil change shortly after you finish and the engine has run a little bit is a good thing to do.

I can't figure out your question on number 4.

    In regards to question/ s,
    1. You need to run or suction some Sea Foam through a vacuum hose to clean the intake.

    2. The vacuum actuator is the fuel pressure regulator and can be check by removing the vacuum fitting and checking for gas. If it wet, you need to replace it.

    3. no idea

    4. no idea.
