Fuel Filler Problem V70-XC70 2003

Hey Everybody! I have a 2003 V70 NA. Recently, when I go to fill the tank, the pump clicks off before the tank is full. This has occurred as several gas stations with different types of pump handles. I have to put the pump on its slowest setting and it will still click off a dozen or so times before I get the tank full. A few months back, we had a similar problem only the filler would overflow all over the side of the car when it was full. Volvo dealer fixed it and said there was a "spider nest" in one of the tank lines. Your thoughts?

Fuel Filler Problem V70-XC70 2003

When gasoline was relatively cheap, this was a common problem. People overfill their tanks, the line going to the charcoal filter gets filled with gasoline instead of fumes, and the tank become difficult to fill.

A spider in the line? I have heard that wive's tale before and find it inconceivable for any insect to build a nest in gasoline vapors.

My suggestion, run the car at 3/4 tank for a couple of refills until the gasoline in the charcoal filter has a chance to vaporize.

Fuel Filler Problem V70-XC70 2003

Yes a spider nest in the line. The service guy at a legitimate Volvo dealership first asked me when I told him the symptoms, it I lived out in the country. I don't live in the country, but he proceeded to tell me that they have seen this problem before. I should have asked to see the nest that they took out of the line. They pulled the filler neck out and replaced a couple of o-rings while they were there and it fixed the problem. It seems that the fuel is slow to enter the tank, would this be symptom of a breather clogged (clogged charcoal filter). The odd thing is that it seems to improve if they car sits off for a few minutes before attempting to fill the tank.
