Cold to warm start valve noise 850 1996

A few months ago, my engine developed a valve lifter noise which begins about a minute after a cold to warm start. It sounds like a single moderately noisy tapping sound. This goes on for a minute or so until several other valves erratically join in. Once the engine is fully warmed, all the valve noises go away. I use Mann oil filters and faithfully have the oil changed every 5000 miles. The cylinder head is a used replacement installed 8000 miles ago after the timing belt tensioner failed. The noise developed about 4000 miles after the head was replaced. Car has 193,000 miles and other wise runs well. Any clues as to the cause and fix of the valve noise?

Thanks to Klaus & Lee. I've been running 3/4 qt Rislone put in after oil change 3000 miles ago. While oil consumption has gone to zilch, the valve lifters still love doing their little dance for a few minutes after every colder start. I'll look into having those o-rings changed way down yonder in the sump.

I was going to suggest the oil filter but you are using the Mann filter. Chances are the O rings in the sump are going bad. I put replacing them at a three wrencher - more time than trouble and they are cheap.

Hydraulic lifters will make noise when the oil pressure is not up to snuff or the passages are slightly clogged. The lifters will NOT cause any damage, so long as you don't get the rpms close to the red line while they are tapping.

If the noise really distracts you, you could try a bottle of AutoRx. Follow the instructions on the bottle. This will clean out any gunk.

If it still happens, it might be the oil pickup rings on the oil pan that are starting to disolve with age. It is a messy job, and a liquid gasket is used.
