850 Engine changes 850 1996

To any that can offer an opinion, help or advice,

I currently have a normally aspirated 850 sedan. I have been searching around the web to find possible solutions to increase power, more importantly, low end tourque. I am looking to modify the engine so I can increase the tourque, as well as the horsepower at the same time, if that's possible. I found a website called Eastern Aeropsace (www.easternaerospace.com). It offers all sorts of solutions for increasing power. One of them is adding a bolt on turbo to the car, but that would cost over $3,000 and a lot of time. Another one of their solutions involves changing the ECU, has anyone done this? The also offer magnacor wires, is there a real difference when these are installed? Moreover, they offer a large bore on the throttle body, would this have any noticable difference? Fianlly, the sell a larger diameter exhaust, would this result in more power, or just more noise? So my real question is has anyone purchased anything from eastern aerospace, and has it worked out? As well, are there other solutions to increase power in the normally apsirated engine?

One other side question;

A friend of mine owns a 1998 S70 with an alarm system installed. I noticed his lights flash when the doors lock. I imagine that the lights are triggered by a momentary contact connected to the door locks, probably not the alarm. Is it safe to assume that the S70 wiring diagram would shed some light on this change? Can it truly be done?

Thank you to all!

Re: 850 Engine changes 850 1996

You probably don't want to hear this but there aren't any real worthwhile power upgrades out there for a NA 850. You're really better off just doing suspension and braking upgrades. But you're right, if you really want to increase HP and torque on a NA 850, it's going to cost you a lot of time and money which is why I, as well as many others, recommend you to not bother. EA has been known to inflate HP and torque gains which is why I suggest to many people who ask to consider shopping elsewhere. Good tuner companies don't need to make outrageous claims to sell their products.

Re: 850 Engine changes 850 96 t-5

hi david:

if you're looking for some kick in the pants performance, you're not going to get it from the n/a. best thing you can do is sell the n/a and get the turbo version. adding a turbo charger is not a one pill cure. there are a lot of little/big things that have to be tweaked/changed along with adding a charger. if i were in your shoes, i'd just sell my n/a and get the turbo.

regards

francis

Re: 850 Engine changes 850 1996

David- If you have a N/A 850(96 you said, right?) DON'T waste your time and MONEY trying to get more power. After spending, say $5Gs(US), you MAY gain 15-20HP/torque!! Is that worth it? I would think not!!!! You have to get the high-output turbo in the 1st place and mod from there to REALLY enjoy the 850. If you like/love the car you have, mod it mildly(say, K&N, a cat back exo, nice 16 or 17 wheels, upgraded shocks/struts, and better aft.mkt speakers/or headunit w/CD) and you will enjoy it MORE. If you want better PERFORMANCE, sell the NA and get a 1997> R or T5. then you're ready to hang with the "SLEEPERS".

P.S- Try NOT to believe all the claims from EA.com. You can get the tune up parts from them, but forget about the Tuning services and big power gains(even for us with Rs and T5s- we don't believe most of it.) good luck,BD

Re: 850 Engine changes 850 1996

I put the upgraded ECU and exhaust on my '97 Turbo almost a year ago. Used the IPD stuff. Very happy with the results. I'm sure someone has some experience with the NA model.
