AC electric fan S40-V40 2004

My AC was not blowing cold air as cool as usual. A trip to the AC guy found out the electric fan in front of the engine was not turning on. He knocked the motor with the end of a long screwdriver and the motor came on. Obviously he recommends replacing this fan which is so expensive when he called volvo.

Is 4 years considered normal life span for these fans? Can this be fixed rather than replaced with a new fan? Anything I should investigate first?

And is it true with an inoperative AC fan, the main radiator fan would need to work harder?

Thanks!

You could wait until the fan dies, however that could also have ill effects on the rest of the system. There are aftermarket pusher fans available for the front of the A/C condenser for < $100. They would have to be wired into the system, but function the same. It is doubtful that the existing fan can be disassembled and repaired. In fact, given the cheap and available aftermarket fans, I wouldn't even try. You could try a junkyard fan, but you never know. An aftermarket one would work well and would probably last for several years, the same as the existing fan.

If the A/C fan is inop, there is no telling the effect on the radiator fan, but one could assume that it would work harder, as the secondary (condenser) fan would not be removing any heat from the condenser or the radiator while running. I would definitely replace it, although whether you need to use a factory part, is debatable.

I would expect more life from the auxiliary fan, but I don't know what kind of parts that particular car has up front. No matter the car, the principle is the same. The fan is there for a purpose, so replacing it with a functional unit would be a good idea.

Would installing an aftermarket fan throw off any error codes?

No. By aftermarket, we mean not factory. If it is made in Bangladesh, it probably not work as long as one made in Brazil, but who cares? So long as it works.

Tapping the motor with a screwdriver makes it sound like the bearings in the motor have dried up or it is no longer getting 12V. Any loud noises? Check the leads, they could also be crudded up.
