Shiny Dash V70-XC70 1998

Hello Fellows

My 1998 V70 AWD has a very shiny dash. For reference it has the grey leather interior, though I'm pretty sure the dash covering material is vinyl. It's about the only design detail I don't like on the car. It looks pretty good, and certainly holds up to UV damage better than the mid-80s 700s did...

It's just not very functional with all that glare. Even when the dash is not particularly clean there is a striking glare off the dash with direct sunlight, and if it's recently been cleaned it's like having a halogen flashlight pointed right at your face.

I can often manage the direct glare off the dash shining right into my eyes by wearing sunglasses, and I think polarized lenses would make an even bigger difference. I hope to get a pair of these soon.

What I can't manage easily is the /reflection/ of the glare off the dash, as it shines up onto the inside of the windshield. It creates a distinct spot on the windshield that is actually very difficult to see through properly.

Does anyone else have this problem? Is it specific to certain years/materials?

Any suggestions for solutions?

Usually caused by someone who used glossy ArmorAll at one time.

First, clean the inside of the windshield. Then use a harsh cleaner on the dash, it is vinyl, until it gets dull. Let it dry and then add some lanolin based leather treatment. Let this dry and buff off the excess.

We have all experienced the same problem, and it will not go away completely. Keeping the windshield clean is your best option, that will reduce the glare.

I will only buy polorized glasses. Most cheap plastic ones under $10 will have the polorized label. I prefer the brown tint, because it works as well in bright sun as it does on hazy days.

Any advice on a good 'harsh' cleaner?

I don't want to ruin the vinyl and end up with an ugly peeling/chemical burned/etc dash. That would be even worse than the shiny!

Windex (more than one application), 409, Mr. Clean, and the list goes on.
