Updating my turbo with newer turbo. 850 1994

My TD04-15G Mitsu. turbo is on it's way out. I would likew to replace it with a slightly larger turbo. Like a TD04-16T of a S70 or a TD04-18T of a AWD V70R. Has any one had any luck changing to a different Turbo and what were the complications of the turbo switch. I figur already the exhaust/Downpipe will need modifications.

Andrew

(chip, 2'5" downpipe, and exhaust, K&N etc, etc.)

Re: Updating my turbo with newer turbo. 850 1994

Andrew,

I replaced my 15G unit with a 16T from a C70 Coupe. The swap is simple enough, but the fitting between the 15G and the downpipe is different from the fitting between the 16T and the downpipe. On my '94 850, the 15G used a loose flange fitting (hard to describe, but essentially the DP fit around a conical portion of the turbo, and was bolted into place by a "loose" flange which floated around the flared end of the DP). The 16T is a fixed flange, which bolts right up to a matching fixed flange on the DP.

My understanding is that the 18T unit won't work as well on cars with an automatic transmission... the 18T doesn't kick in until higher RMPs than the 16T units.

Personally, my 16T give you a good kick in the pants at 3000 rpm.

You might also consider installing larger fuel injectors and a stronger waste-gate.

- Enjoy!

Re: Updating my turbo with newer turbo. 850 1994

andrew, if you haven't already done so, research the faq's at http://www.tme.com to familiarize yourself with some issues pertaining to turbos and volvos.

One factoid I learned there - a bigger turbo results in slower off-the-line acceleration (but higher top end speed). Slightly larger might not make much difference.

It's not like Volvo to make major alterations to engineering specifications, and if the new one isn't a simple bolt-on, it's still liable to be pretty do-able. If you could get the exhaust body from the S70, I'd guess this would mate up with the engine as the 70s and 800s have the same block. Can't imagine they've made any changes to the casting.

While you're at it, why not save yourself the problem, and get a downpipe custom made for the new turbo? A custom downpipe with a race cat should only go for about $400 US. Compared to a couple grand for a new turbo, that's not much more.
