Cabin Air Filter 850 96

I've noticed a number of posts discussing the cabin air filter, which sits under the windshield shroud, on the passenger side, in the engine compartment.

I've got a 96 850 Wagon, manual, normally aspirated. It does not have this filter. It doesn't even look as if it had supports which might hold a filter.

Did this filter only come on the fancier models--GLTs and Turbos?

Does anyone know if this filter is available for retrofit? Is there a retrofit kit which has supports for a filter?

Thanks.

Yes, there is a retrofit kit which consists of only two things, I believe: the pollen filter and a retaining bracket. I don't know the kit part number, but the parts numbers you can order separately are:

    9488525: bracket

9488527: the better carbon/paper pollen filter

The kit itself will no doubt come with the cheaper paper-only pollen filter, which is part number 9171296, but I and other people on the board recommend the better one. Both can be obtained at a reasonable price through our buddy Dan at volvoparts.com. You might want to ask him if there are any other parts to the kit, just to be sure.

Being naturally paranoid after my evap replacement, I change my pollen filter out every 8-10K. But I'm out here in CA and we have a lot of pollen and other junk in the air, maybe your experience will be different.

Now be nice to our friend Bernie :-)

The paper and charcoal type filters are NOT interchangeable. Each one has a different bracket. In fact, the older paper filters may not even be available anymore.

All the more reason to speak with Dan at volvoparts.com and find out the skinny. But as far as I know, the two part numbers I mentioned do work together.

Definitely talk to your parts advisor. My '95 850 had the original bracket and I had bought a multi-year supply of filters. This past year, however, I discovered that the old paper filter was no longer available, and I had to replace the entire bracket assembly with the new part in order to make use of the new charcoal filters. BTW, the new filters cost twice as much!!!!

Gerald, it is my understanding that there are two different retrofit kits. One for the older style filter, like the one you had and one that uses the same filters as S/V/C70s. Now, those newer filters come in two versions and are, to my knowledge interchangeable. There is however a rumor that upon installation of the charcoal filter, the climate control software needs to be updated (presumably to increase the fan speeds to overcome the extra resistance of the charcoal filter). I still have the paper one in my '98 S70 and I have a new one I bought from volvoparts.com (also paper) and to my knowledge these filter are and will be available. I am personally not exactly sure what the advantages of the charcoal filter are. I assume they can filter out some odors, but other than that I don't think they protect your evap any better than the paper ones. The paper ones are a bit cheaper too.

            Cheers

It first showed up on the 70 series. There is a retro-fit

kit. I don't have the part number or price but I think

the cost is not too bad.

Also, some 850s might have it if their air conditioner was

repaired. I believe that for a short time the filter was

supplied with some components used to repair air conditioner

parts. Not sure if that is stil the case.
