S70 Runs for 1 second, dies, no start after that S70 1999

99 S70 AWD Turbo, 126,000 miles. Plugs, MAF, O2 Sensors, fuel filter, temp sensor changed 8,000 miles ago.

Stored car over winter, was having trouble starting and running when stored, but could get it to go.

Took out of storage, hard to start - took several minutes, then ran OK to home, about 20 minutes. Replaced battery (Wal Mart special, died over winter), then hard to start - took several minutes, then ran for 20 minutes driving OK as before, but would die if I suddenly let off accelerator, then start right up again.

Now it 'starts' and runs fine for 1 second, then dies. Wait 60 seconds, then try to start and same thing. I can do this until battery runs out of charge, but never runs for more than 1 second. Tried starting holding gas pedal down, tried with it up, tried in middle - no change - will start for a second, then die, but I have to wait 30-60 seconds between tries. Tried cranking until battery dies - several minutes - no luck.

Am getting spark, and fuel rail valve squirts fuel when key is on. Tried disconnect MAF - no difference. Measured resistance at temp sensor, and is within OK bounds. Tried wiggling connectors, wiggled key, checked fuses, removed/reinserted relays in their sockets, did magic Volvo dance and chanted incantations - no luck.

No codes register since taking it out of storage. Last fall had sensor lights, can't remember which; one was ominous looking three letter dash light, like ECU or EPS, or XYZ....

Since my clue bag is empty - I appreciate any that you may have.

Thanks!

Flinch

Shazaaaaam ! Klaus is my hero! Fuel pump relay not my hero! S70 1999

Swapped out my '97 850 fuel pump relay with the '99 relay - and she runs like it were new (OK, it runs...).

Klaus - you oughta be a Volvo mechanic ;> !!

Thanks!

Thanks. But you described the condition properly, runs for 1 second. When you turned the key to on, the pump primed and had just enough fuel for 1 rev. Triggering the starter killed the FP relay and you ran out of gas.

Open the relay and look at the solder. It is probably cracked and can be re-soldered, if you have an iron. Otherwise, get a new 103 relay and have fun!!

Do you have a another key? Try that. It almost sounds like the immobilizer is turning the car off. Or the fuel pump relay stopped working.

Sadly, only one key - all the rest were taken by the key fairy. I can hear fuel pump running when key is on. I found the cluster of relays under the plastic cover in front of the fuse box. Which is the fuel relay, and is there an easy test for function? I have meter and understand relays/function. If the relay is constant contact when key is on, I can jumper it.

Any tests for immobilizer (well named part!)?

Thanks \Flinch

Make a wish: OK, I will. I want world peace, a pony, and Volvo to GET RID OF EVERY SENSOR/GIMMICK ON THE CARS PLEASE!

+1 on the wish list!!

The FP relay is #103 in the fuse tray. Read this thread:

http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/volvo/1265592/850/way_isolate_falid_betwen_gas_pump_relay.html

There is an immobilizer ring at the rear of the keyed portion of the switch. Usually, if this breaks, the starter will not engage. But, sometimes the car will start and shut down. Try starting in neutral to eliminate a bunch more variables.

Will do. Also found this:
http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9681
which shows how to rebuild relay, if you are cheap like I am. Since I just redid my ABS module on my 850, this sounds like cake.

I will dig into a) relay, b) immobilizer ring (test connections) tomorrow - promise I will let all know what the fix is! ( er, IF I fix it!!! ;> ).

Thanks
