Potential xc 90 2.5T or v/8 buyer XC90

Howdy,

I am wondering about purchasing a used XC 90. I am well aware that the I6 has some serious problems with the GM (as mandated by Ford accounting) transmission. However, I haven't found much information about the overall reliability of the 2.5 Turbo or V/8 Yamaha models. Any suggestions or advice would be tremoundously appreciated. Thank you in advance.

MANY XC90s for sale all over the place XC90

If you really really want an XC90, you should be able to strike a great bargain. I see more of them listed used at Volvo dealers than any other models, maybe even more than all the other models combined.

Thanks for the input. Although not sure this is a ringing endorsement for the model. I wonder if Volvo will stay in the suv market in the long run. Thanks again.

SUV sales hit the skids last summer with the high gas prices. The XC70 wagon holds more stuff, gets better mileage, has the same ground clearance, but you don't sit as high.
If you put a carrier on top of the roof in an XC90, don't try pulling into your garage like you are driving a station wagon!

Volvo still makes the 2.5T engine but stopped using the Yamaha V8 because of MPG considerations and the very tight engine bay (read, hard to work on).

The 2 models are totally different, trim wise. Seats, luggage space, etc. The V8 came with most of the options as standard, the 2.5T didn't come with a rear seat.

The V8 is the same engine used in the Ford Taurus SHO, so parts should be easy to get at a Ford dealer, except exhaust?

The lower bhp for the light pressure turbo 2.5 will give you reasonable mpg but compromises the accelleration when trying to merge on the highway. The V8 also carried wider tires.

Two different cars, and it is your decision. Both should be reasonably cheap these days. Dont't get the XC90 with the T6 engine unless you want to know the service advisors by their first names :)

Thank you very much for the input. I have never owned a volvo before but have owned just about one of every other type of car. I never realized the Yamaha engine was the same as the Ford SHO. That was a hot and quite underated car. There is quite a bit of tuning potential for that particular engine. Although, it is somewhat lost in this particular platform. Thanks again for the feedback.
