Barometric Sensor V70-XC70 1998

I have a V70 T5. Few days ago my CHECK ENGINE light came up so I took my car to the shop. They tested it with the scanner and said that the Barometric Sonsor has failed and costs about$300 to replace. They replaced this about 2-3 years ago. I understand that this sensor is useful where you drive in high altitude. I live in Michigan so there is no high altitude. My question is that is it ok and possible to disconnect this so CHECK ENGINE does not come up again.
Thanks.

The computer wants the input, so disconnecting is not an option. Finding a used one in the salvage yard is a viable option. I would first unplug it and clean both sides of the plug, use di-electric grease to keep moisture out and see if that works.

By all means I am not a mechanic. But I do have some wrenches and screwdrivers. Is this something simple that I can do myself? Is there a diagram or something that shows where this thing is and what it looks like? Is it as simple as changing a light bulb or as hard as changing brake pads? Thanks.

If I remember correctly, it is behind the passenger headlamp and screwed down to the lower fender with 1 torx screw. Easier than a light bulb.

I got the same Barostat code on a long drive to San Fran. Cleaned the sensor per Klaus' directions, hasn't been a problem for a few months now. I emailed Erie Volvo on the web, they quoted around $70 for a used one.
