Front Rotors Replace or Re-use? V70-XC70

Hi guys, my front rotors feel fine while driving, no shimmying and pretty solid. The pads are wore out after inspection, but the rotors have a small lip around the edge probably about 1/32". Ive got some OEM pads for it and Im wondering if I should just put them on and forget about it. Ive just spent about $1000 in parts recently and am cheaping out with these rotors if I can help it.

This will be the second set of pads on these rotors. Is that lip around the edge a normal thing? Does that keep the new pad from fully contacting the rotor?

It is really not a great idea too run a second sets of pads on those rotors. The rotors are certainly well enough worn to warrant replacement. And, for the relative low price of rotors it is not worth all of your time and the potential wasted cost of the pads if you do not replace them. Turning pads is a fools move as far as I am concerned. Most turned rotors warp on the first panic stop. While turning does reface and remove the wear ridge, it does this at the expense of material that is needed to brake and dissipate heat.
Replace the pads and the rotors and enjoy the results.
Honestly, I always replace both at the same time. Why wouldn't you? If you are doing the work yourself, the parts are very cheap.

That lip appears to be inherent in the design. That lip started to show up right after the first set of pads. I was concerned too. This second set of pads has made it very pronounced. I don't normally turn rotors unless they are warped or tapered. No reason to in my book. You may want to determine if it's better to replace than turn them.

Since the rotors are inexpensive, and I'm at 122K, I'm going to replace them. This time I'm going to ceramic pads and the drilled type rotor.

Prices on that "infamous" online auction site have been reasonable.

I just replaced the pads on mine once. When the second set of pads wore down I checked the rotor thickness with a caliper and was well under the minimum. The raised area on the outside rim would indicate you may have the same issue.

I did that with my V70R, replaced the pads and left the rotor. I should have removed the rotor and had them turned to remove the lip. But, just to remove the lip! These rotors are already too thin to turn.
My brother-in-law just takes a file and files off the edge. He's nuts!
Some will put the new pads on, stop a few times, pull the pads off, and then grind down the outer edge so that they ddon't touch the lip.
If you get OEM pads to replace the OEM pads, there should not be a problem. Some of the aftermarket are just a little bit larger and will rid up on the edge of the lip, causing poor contact.

Forget it, Im just going to put the OEM pads on have faith they will settle in. For the first time damnitt I want two sets of pads on 1 pair of rotors.

If the rotors are at or below spec thickness, they 'should ' be replaced.

As a practical matter, the braking efficiency will be the same unless the rotors are too thin to absorb / conduct the heat of braking, i.e. the brakes fade. The swept area is still the same and the surface ripples will wear into the pads quickly. Take it easy on the brakes for a couple days.

Hi guys, thanks for the help. An update, i replaced just the pads and they seem to be perfectly fine with the lip I was talking about. Glad I saved the $100 on rotors.
