Help: I've messed up a timing belt change 850

Hi,

I lined up the cam gears when taking the timing belt off but stupidly ignored the crank gear - this is my first time. When taking the belt off, I noticed that the crank pulley was off by about 30 degrees from the mark.

Is it possible that things are completely out of synch now despite me lining all the gears up? Should cylinder 1 be at TDC and if so, which is cylinder 1?
How many times in the cycle will the cam and crank gears line up?

I'd be immensely grateful if somebody could help me out, this is my daily driver.

Regards,
Josh

If you haven't moved the crank gear, put the belt on as if nothing was wrong. Then... slowly crank the engine clockwise by HAND. If it stops moving, STOP! The cams are in the wrong position. If you can move it 720 degrees (2X) with out anything touching internally, you should be close. Then, and only then, try to line up the timing marks.
The #1 cyl is closest to the timing gear. Pull all of the plugs to help make turning the engine by hand easier.
The piston goes through 2 cycles for every detonation, one of which is the real TDC when the valves are all closed.

Help: I've messed up a timing belt change 850

      Hi ,

Thanks for the advice. Another question, if the cam gears are aligned, how many possible positions can the crank gear be in? I assume that it's either aligned with the mark or 180 degrees away. Is this correct ?

Thanks again for the help, the contributors on this forum are just fantastic.

That only sounds good on paper. The marks are not 180 different because of the way the cam moves in relation to the crank.

When the belt is back on, hopefully without moving any of the 3 gears, then align the crank and the cams. If you are off a few teeth, you will need to get everything lined up and remove the belt and put it on properly.

Good luck and take your time.

Thanks for the help and support Klaus, I got everything buttoned up and everything works perfectly. I've taken the car for a test drive and it goes well.
Thanks again for your help. I'm not sure what I'd do if it wasn't for chaps like you on this forum.

          Cheers,

I always wondered what would happen if I did what you did. In THEORY, you could just make a chalk mark in the cams and crank pulley and change the belt. No need to "align" anything.
The clincher being that if something goes amiss, there is no way to align things after the belt comes off without taking the valve cover off and that is a lot more work.
            Glad it all works :)

            Josh,

Congrats!! Keeping a cool head prevails. From being in your shoes, I could feel the stomach wrenching as I read your first post. I can't count the prayers I said when in the same spot...

I too have gotten invaluable help from this board.

            Kudos to Klaus!!
