2001 S80 T6 leaking at end of fuel rail S80

Really need help. Had my wife's 2001 S80 T6 at the Volvo dealer for the throttle sensor recall (they ended up replacing the whole computer). I also had them check a fuel smell under the hood - thought there was a recall for that, but the service guy said there is not. Turns out there is a pretty good leak from the fuel rail at the end on the driver's side of the car. There is a brass fitting on that end. When I put my finger under that fitting, it gets wet with fuel.

I really need to get this fixed so my wife can drive the car again, but I don't have the $400 the dealer wanted to fix the issue. Outside of lighting a match, does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this?

Hand granades are fun but messy. The brass fitting needs to come out, wrapped with plumbers white tape stuff, and replaced.
If you wait for a cold engine, there will not be any fuel pressure.

Klaus, I suspected this might be a fix. Have you done this before? Does the teflon tape (I assume that is what you mean by white tape) hold up to fuel?

My biggest question is how do I get the fitting out. I don't remember there being anything to grab onto.

Thanks very much for your input. And, uh, I strongly recommend buying another R!!!

If it is a schrader valve fitting, the valve itself can be unscrewed and replaced. Just like a bicycle tire tube, or the valve on your tires. In that case, no tefflon tape, just a new valve.
The dealer will want to replace the entire fuel rail.

Klaus,

I used a tire valve tool, tightened the existing valve, put a tire valve cap on the housing. Seems to have resolved the problem. Saved me the $400 the dealer wanted to replace the rail.

Thanks for the input.

Erik

An example of what the Brickboard is all about! With just 2 posts this week, I have saved close to $3K from being spent on dealers.

Because you were able to tighten the valve, that is what the problem was. It is never supposed to be loose. Putting a dust cover on it is a good thing. Bicycle stores have metal valve caps for 25cents, which look better and have a valve stem removal tip builtin.
