hard/slow clutch pedal? 850 1997

On my '97 manual 850, I just drove to the local YMCA to work out tonight, and noticed that the clutch pedal is rather hard to push and returns a bit slowly (I can easily move my foot back faster than the pedal). Granted, it's -3F right now, but I'm wondering if this is mostly just a need for a good slave cylinder bleeding or if it is indicative of deeper problems. Any thoughts? Or just wait till it gets warmer?

This is probably the coldest weather the car has ever seen, as it was in Georgia it's entire life before moving to Ohio last year. Since last winter never really got below zero, it's a new experience for the beast. I has been garaged at our place until the "new" V70 T5 just showed up....

thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Nate

The clutch is driven off of the brake master cylinder - with the same fluid but it is the lowest point in the system. My guess is that the brake fluid is contaminated and freezing in your cold weather. I would flush the brake fluid and see if the behavior changes. I use the ATE Super Blue racing fluid when I change my brake fluid so that I can see the difference in color when I have completed the flush. On my stick I just flushed the brakes and the clutch kinda mixed back in but it didn't have a problem to begin with. In your case you may want to pump some fluid out of the slave cylinder before you flush and bleed the rest of the system.

Thanks...that was kinda my theory about what was going on, but I wasn't quite positive about it. I'll give it a try and see what comes out. I did bleed the brakes about a year ago, but I failed to bleed the clutch slave cylinder.
