Hey guys,

Went to Jiffy Lube today because its impossible to change oil in 20 degree cold with snow outside (always do it myself except in winter), and they put 5W20 in the car (according to the receipt). I didnt notice it til I got home. I did give them a MANN filter though (+ for me :D).

Should I go back and have them drain and fill it again, or would it be ok. BTW, I am in New Hampshire

While it certainly wouldn't be my first choice, it shouldn't be a problem.

Ford and Honda have recommended 5W (or0W)-20 for a couple years now. Think Toyota has also gone to that.

It gives a bit better fuel economy, though you may not see any. Over the fleet use, it can save them some grief with the government.

Were it mine, I'd change oil myself, once a year, using AMSOIL 0W-30.

No harm done. Switch back for the summer.

Heck, it's 20F in my garage! Changing warm engine oil feels good :)

I stick to 5W30 and it works great all year round.

I have been using 5W20 for many years now in our '94 850 during the winter months as recommended by our mechanic. In the summer I bump it up to 10W30.

I have a 1996 850 Turbo, and happened to bring it to a Volvo dealer here in central Connecticut 2 weeks ago for some service. I usually do stuff on my own, but didn't feel like dealing with a coolant flush and they were running a special. Anyway, when they did the oil change with the work order, they notified me that about 3 years ago Volvo corporate changed their requirements to 5w30 across the board for year round oil for almost every Volvo model. I am taking this corporate recommendation and will be running 5w30 Mobil 1 in my car from now on. I have been using 10w30 Mobil 1 up until now.

Just my recent discoveries when dealing with a straight up Volvo Dealer.

A look at the owner's manual for a 2005 S60 has a bunch of viscosities:

0W30 or 0W40 for temp ranges -30F to 105F
5W30 for temps -22F to 86F
5W40 for temps -10F to 104F
10W30 for temps -1F to 104F

So take your pick, just pick a synthetic please to keep the engine clean :)

I used the S60 as an example because it still has the 5 cyl engine. Things might be different for the 3.2L engine.
