Power steering S70 1998

Recently the steering wheel has been requiring more force to turn, but not consistently. It turns normally for a few degrees, then hits some resistance, then free, then harder. Replaced the steering rack about two years ago with a rebuild from FCP Groton. Is the rack likely the culprit or something else (pump?).

I had your exact problem last year. I know your problem, the steering was inconsistently hard to turn and would smoothen out as it warmed up. I flushed the steering fluid several times with new fluid including with what the dealer sold me and finally it was a liter of Mobile 1 synthetic Transmission fluid that saved the day. I had to flush until i used the whole liter of Mobile 1 before i saw results.

The bottom steering column knuckle could be the culprit. Grease it up and see what happens.

It's tough to see anything in there - is the knuckle where the steering column connects to the part protruding from the steering valve (part of the rack)?
How best to access it for greasing (short of disassembling everything)?

I just found out those 2 knuckles cannot be greased? You could try a bit of WD 40 to see if it loosens up. There are 2 sets, one just below the firewall and the other as it connects into the rack, IIRC.
There was only one other instance of someone with the same problem, he replaced the knuckle at the dealer. Part was around $135, labor the same.

If there is a good indie close to you, get a learned opinion.
