Trip Computers 850

I see that ebay has a couple trip computers for sale.....they tell temperature and a few different mileage things i guess......Has anyone ever installed one of these? Looks like a simple swap of the clock to me and a new plug.........

Just wondering where it gets the temp. info. Might be kind of nice to know when the outside temp falls below freezing.....

These were an expensive dealer add when the car was new......

Gwen, it is time to register yourself on the BB. It is quite confidential.

As to the computer, yours already displays time and temp. The enhanced version displays time, temp, mpg, trip miles, and miles to empty. You still need to reset the trip odo to get real mpg when you tank up.

Make sure you get all of the wiring, from the switch to the display and to the wiring harness.

I have no idea if it will work, both of my 850s had computers and I didn't bother to look. The switch plugs into the rear of the cluster.

I'd love to know more about this too.

Any idea if the trip computers from an 850 can be installed in the early S/V70s?

Thx.....I think I'm going to bid on one with the plug that looks similar to my 1994's plug that supplies current to the clock. If the trip thing works, It will save me from using the cars gear driven trip. I'll post if it works......

If you don't already have a thermometer I doubt that it will work when you install the trip computer one. There's a thermometer sensor that is mounted up behind the front bumper that supplies signal to the box. Perhaps they are available from the stealership?

I would be surprised if the rest of the functions (mileage and fuel economy) aren't plug and play. I have a clock and thermometer, but have always wondered if the trip computer/switch would be plug and play. Please let us know!

If/when you pull the cluster to make the switch, consider changing the four cluster illumination bulbs. My experience is that one or more of the original bulbs will quit working during the process.

Yes, I'm very curious about the same thing.

My 1998 V70 has the computer which displays time and temperature. The temp sensor is indeed mounted up in the front air dam/bumper/plastic thing.

I would love to get the other advanced functions of the 'good' trip computer like the instantaneous fuel econ numbers, etc. I dearly hope they are plug and play, and I can get all that techy (and eco) goodness for relatively cheap by going for one of these parts kits from ebay.

I will agree with replacing the bulbs - I've never had my cluster out before but I figure every time you take something like that out you're risking breaking tabs and messing with the 'fit', and you may as well do the bulbs while you're in there. What's a few $10s in bulbs really? they should last a long time once they are changed.

Bulbs are cheap at the parts store, the dealer adds a zero.

The computer should work with the existing plug. Just make sure you get the wiring for the dash switch.

This guy says they are compatible:

"...trip computer control switch from a 1997 VOLVO 855 Turbo wagon. Very good condition. Excellent working condition. works with all 850 and 1998, 1999 and super early production 2000 70 series cars with trip computer system. In 70 series cars, your switches are pewter. Please not that this switch is BLACK."
