My Odometer quit two years ago at 279K. Just now took the dash out to replace both the gears. I have had them for over a year now.

Took everything apart, but both of the orginal gears ok, not broken? What else can cause the odometer to not work. Electonic trip meter works.


Can the actual milage be read by the dealer? I would like to find out what it is. I should be around 325,000 miles on the car now.

Upon closer inspection with a magnifing glass and glasses, I found a chip out of 2 teeth! Eyes are not what they used to be.

Make sure you have the negative battery disconnected and make sure you plug the airbag plug in on the passenger side before you start the car up again.....

Go to the dealer with hat in hand and ask them to PLEASE verify the mileage so that you can change the odo to match. Unfortunately, that means driving to the dealer and putting the dash back in the car so you don't get an airbag warning.
But that is only 15 minutes worth of work.

Cut the eraser end of a pencil off about 2". put that into a variable speed drill and have it turn counterclockwise. place the eraser against the speedometer drive and start turning the mileage forward. You have a long way to go so it will take a while.

I called the dealer and asked how much they would charge to give me the actual milage. The answer I got was "It can't be done. Our mechanics can tell by looking at the car how many miles it has on it."

I will try another dealer.
